Strengthening Regional Capacity in Late Blight Research: AsiaBlight Training 2025

Universitas Gadjah Mada continues to strengthen its contribution to regional and international plant pathology research through active participation in global scientific initiatives. Prof. Ani Widiastuti, S.P., M.P., Ph.D., a lecturer in the Master of Phytopathology Program, Universitas Gadjah Mada, took part in the Asia Blight Training on Molecular-Based Mating Type and Fungicide Sensitivity of Phytophthora infestans, held in Yanqing, Beijing, from 30 October to 3 November 2025.

The training program brought together 14 regional representatives from 14 Asian countries, including Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines, Thailand, India, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Laos. This diverse participation created a collaborative platform for researchers to exchange knowledge, share regional experiences, and strengthen scientific networks in addressing late blight disease, one of the most destructive plant diseases affecting major food crops worldwide. read more

UGM Phytopathology Students Selected for Sakura Science Program 2025 at Ibaraki University

Universitas Gadjah Mada proudly announces that Rizku Laily Shiami and Asih Widyaningrum, students of the Master of Phytopathology Program, have been selected to participate in the Sakura Science Program 2025, hosted by Ibaraki University, Japan, from 4 to 15 November 2025. Their selection represents a significant academic achievement and reflects UGM’s continued commitment to strengthening international collaboration in agricultural and plant protection sciences.

The Sakura Science Program is a prestigious international exchange initiative designed to promote scientific cooperation and capacity building among young researchers. This year’s program is conducted under the theme “New Approaches to Disease Control in Tropical Crops,” bringing together emerging scientists from Indonesia and Japan to explore innovative strategies for managing plant diseases in tropical and subtropical agroecosystems. read more

Laboratory Socialization: Preparing Master in Phytopathology Students for Research Excellence

The Master in Phytopathology Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), conducted a Laboratory Socialization activity on 30th August 2025 as part of the academic orientation for new students in the 2024/2025 odd semester. The event aimed to introduce students to the laboratory facilities, research opportunities, and safety procedures that will support their studies and research activities throughout the program.

During the session, lecturers and laboratory staff provided an overview of the different laboratories under the Department of Plant Protection, including facilities for mycology, bacteriology, virology, nematology, and molecular plant pathology. Each laboratory head explained the available equipment, research focus, and potential topics for thesis work, giving students a comprehensive understanding of the program’s research ecosystem. read more
